The European Union is investing about 200 million of Euros in Greenland, mainly for infrastructure and mining of critical raw materials. Also – another joint declaration by the EU, Greenland and Denmark was signed, too. This is important since it strengthens the strategic position of the EU regarding the cooperation with the autonomous island. The partnership also sends a strong signal against pressure coming from the USA.
Greenland stands increasingly at the center of geopolitical tensions. USA President Donald Trump made it clear that his country continues to lay claim to Greenland and said that punitive tariffs would be implemented towards European countries if they do not agree to sell the island to the USA. Both Greenland and Denmark however strongly oppose such efforts by the USA. The European Union empahises the right to self determination of the inhabitants in Greenland and Denmark to which the island officially belongs.
