On 1st October 2020 one hundert years passed from the adoption of the Austrian Federal Constitution. Therefore the Austrian Constitution is one of the oldest in Europe. In addition the foundation of its own Constitutional Court was a model for the whole world: after the end of the Second World War and at the Europe‘s democratisation process the example of the Austrian Constitutional Court served as a model for numerous countries. The Constitutional Court is celebrating its jubilee – however with a delay due to coronavirus pandemic- and at this occasion it wants to inform the Austrian population about its work and about the Austrian Constitution.
At the centennial anniversary of the Constitutional Court on 28th June the travelling exhibition stopped in Klagenfurt and can be visited in front of BG/BRG for Slovenes till this Friday. While visiting the opening of the exhibition the State Governor Peter Kaiser stressed the important meaning of this event.
The President of the Constitutional Court Christoph Grabenwarter emphasized that the Austrian Constitution is undoubtfully based upon democracy and legal state system. „ We have a constitution, in which the international protection of minorities and the protection of human rights are anchored.“ Here the Constitutional Court is treated as a guarantee of these obligations.
His Slovenian collegue, the President of the Slovenian Constitutional Court Rajko Knez thanked for the invitation to this event and mentioned the importance of the common connectedness. „ Today we are meeting here due to a historical occasion „, so Knez. Also in the case when in a democratic society the majority population has a possibility for decision making, such a decision can not endanger the basis rights of the minority
Among others the following persons were present at the opening ceremony: the President of the „Landtag“ Reinhart Rohr, the Deputy President of the „Landtag“ Andreas Schwerwitzl, Bernard Sadovnik, the Mayor of the Municipality Globasnitz, the President of ZSO Manuel Jug, the President of the Administrative Court of Carinthia Armin Ragossnig, the Head of the Carinthian Government Office Dieter Platzer and Zalka Kuchling, the principal of BG/BRG for Slovenes.
