The Municipality of Brda and the AACC ( Alps- Adriatic Centre for Cross-border Co-operation ) organised the traditional Cherry Festival on 28th May in Villach and on 2nd June in Klagenfurt, where the Municipality Klagenfurt was the host.
Cherries have been connecting both municipalities for a long time
In front of the Town Hall the passers-by were greeted by this king’s red fruit, which was brought to Carinthia following the old tradition. Already in the Monarchy peasants from Brda were bringing their cherries to Klagenfurt and even to Vienna. Juicy cherries are therefore a sort of link for cooperation between the Municipalities of Brda and Klagenfurt, as the Director of Municipality Administration of Brda, Anita Manfreda stressed at the opening.
The Klagenfurt’s Mayor Christian Scheider (Team Kaernten ) agreed that the cooperation between both municipalities is fine and fruitful.
The Vice-Mayor of the Carinthian capital Lojze Dolinar from Team Kaernten , who is responsible for the cross border cooperation in the Alps-Adriatic area emphasised long term friendship of both municipalities , the tradition with cherries strengthened this connection, so Dolinar.
The initiator of the Cherry Festival was more than 10 years ago the President of the AACC, now also the actual Mayor of Globasnitz Bernard Sadovnik ( Einheitsliste ). He concluded that in the meantime the contacts between both municipalites even got stronger.
Matjaž Prinčič, the cherry grower from Brda, was present on 28th May in Villach. He came also to Klagenfurt, where he was inviting the guests to Brda. He explained some facts about this year’s cherry harvest, too.
