According to the standpoint of the Austrian Federal Chancellor Sebastian Kurz it is necessary to diminish the number of the European Commissioners, namely from the existing 28 (one from each EU country member) to only 18 Commissioners. In order to ensure the equal representation of each contry member, it is necessary that the election of the Commissioners is based on the system of rotation. In such way it is possible to make financial savings, additionally the Commission would be »more efective and focused.«
Also the German Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Frenh President Emmanuel Macron are advocats of a smaller European Commission. In connection with the on going negotiations about the Euroepan budget 2021- 2027 Kurz demands – on the contrary with the ideas of the Commission to increase the budget to 1,1 % of the GDP- that it does not exceed the actually valid 1%.
As a new saving measure the Austrian Chancellor proposes, that the double seat of the European parliament in Bruxelles and Strasbourg is organized at only one location.
