On September 29th the Freedom Party of Austria (FPÖ) won the parliamentary elections in Austria ahead of the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP), Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) was the third. The right wing FPÖ has already become the strongest political power in Austria at the European elections held in June. Populists are still gaining influence and a move to the right is general in the whole Europe.
All over Europe the right orientated parties are gaining power also at state elections, for instance the Party for Freedom (PVV) in the Netherlands, the Italian right wing party Fratelli d’Italia or the right Rassemblement National in France (RN ). In Germany the party AfD recorded a huge success at the elections in Saxony, Thuringia and Brandenburg.
The move to the right is a political sign, which describes the growing popularity and consequently the influence of right wing populist, right wing nationalist and right wing extremist parties in many European countries.
According to the experts the success of the populist parties is a cross border phenomen inside the EU. The election’s results of FPÖ in Austria and AfD in Thuringia are more than a casual events. Primarily the questions of migrations and inflation are pushing the movement of right wing trend.
