Trade war with USA: new duties, new deadlines

The transatlantic trade conflict among the USA and numerous countries – including the EU member states – is escalating and holds the world economy in tension. Now new steps in its development can be perceived. President Trump unveiled a prolongation of the date by 1st August and signed the relevant decree. At the same time he sharpend his tone: according to his words twelve to fifteen countries – the EU member states are not affected – have recently received a message from the White House, where new penalty levies between 25 and 40 percents are announced. Also the negotiations between the EU and the USA are continuing. The Commission has recently informed that it is endeavouring for a principled, at least initial, agreement with the American Government.

The EU Commission’s opinion is the agreement with the USA can be finalised »in the next days«, what could prevent from additional customs duties for European products. However generally the time gap is too short for a complex trade agreement, therefore basicly a political solution remains the short term goal.
