Carinthia and Europe – discussion about migrants in Carinthian Landtag

The European political hour in the Carinthian Parliament offered a stage for a lively discussion about the challenges of migrations and cooperation at the intersection between regional politics and European cooperation.

In spite of partial discrepancies among parties all agreed that the problem of illegal migrations can not be solved only at a regional or national level. The majority of parties even demaned a unique EU procedure, especially regarding a fair distribution of migrants within the member states.

The Carinthian Governor Peter Kaiser – as EU referent- clearly expressed his opinion for a strong European Union. He stressed that we need a common EU- refugee politics in order to enable the member countries the preparation of measures based on such a document. The discussion also emphasised the importance of peace, which can be according to the judgement of Social Democratic Party guaranteed only in the frame of the unified European Union.
